Firm founder, Bassam Mustafa, opened BSM Accounting after beginning his education as a Finance major and later being exposed to investment and financial tools. After seeing the importance of preventing financial issues and properly organizing business’ books, he decided to go back to college and earn a second major in Accounting, while working alongside small business owners and individuals in his community. Since then, Bassam has been dedicated to providing comprehensive services for small business owners and individual clients.
Bassam Mustafa is a New Jersey Enrolled Agent and business consultant who graduated from Montclair State University with a BS in Business Administration and a concentration in Accounting and Finance. During his professional career, Bassam spent time working for well-known financial institutions, including Merrill Lynch and Deliotte & Touché, as well as small businesses.
After earning his double major in Finance, Bassam pursued a career as a public auditor and dedicated his time working alongside Senior Vice Presidents of Financial Advisors, Certified Public Accountants, and Chief Financial Officers of various domestic and foreign corporations. After dedicating over seven years to the corporate world, Bassam decided to take his experience in business and understanding of audits and translate those into providing valuable services to small and medium businesses, such as bookkeeping, payroll, federal and state tax compliance, IRS representation, and business consulting. Within his first year of operations, Bassam pursued an Enrolled Agent license, in which the IRS recognizes him as a tax expert and allows him to represent his clients in front of the IRS and tax court in all 50 states.
Bassam’s areas of professional expertise include tax regulations, bookkeeping, cash flow management, small business operations, financial statement audits, accounting system set-up, budgeting, invoicing, financial analysis, and review of internal controls and assets. With a diverse background in small business management , global wealth management, and public audit, Bassam has gained in-depth and hands-on experience with a wide range of financial and business tasks, such GAAP, financial reporting, and sales forecasting. Bassam also has experience working with a variety of industries and niches, including manufacturing, non-profits, and automotive.
Bassam combines his knowledge of accounting, training ability, and finance to consult on businesses’ books, potential tax savings, tax liabilities, and start-up entities.
Luis Ortuno decided to pursue a career in Accounting after being exposed to it at Valley National Bank. As a college student, Luis was working at Valley National Bank and realized the importance of proper bookkeeping and tax filings. He saw that banks would always ask for financial statements and tax returns when clients wanted to apply for a mortgage. Luis also noticed that businesses should always have a good accountant to keep track of business expenses. He saw that whenever a client needed a loan most of them could not get anything approved because they didn’t have proper financial records. After seeing this through his own experiences he decided to pursue a career in Accounting to help the people in his community.
Luis Ortuno grew up in Paterson, NJ and attended H.A.R.P (Health and Related Professions) Academy high school. During that time Luis was enrolled in honor classes for all four years and took a few college credit courses. He graduated as one of the top students and attended Passaic County Community College.
Throughout his time in college he was able to excel in all his accounting courses. Before graduating he took a QuickBooks course and had hands on experience with federal taxation. He was able to gain all the knowledge and experience from a well-known and respected Professor, Edwin Pagan, who taught him everything he needed to know. Luis graduated with honors and obtained his degree in Accounting.
Luis was a Sales Associate and a Supervisor for three years at Valley National Bank. He helped clients open different accounts such as checking, saving, money markets, and IRA’s. Luis also helped his clients apply for mortgages, personal, and home equity loans. His focus was working with business clients to help them open their account for their new business. As well as helping existing clients obtain line of credits and commercial loans.
During his last semester in college Luis was given the privilege to intern at BSM Accounting Services while still working at Valley National Bank. During this period, he gained real life experience and had the opportunity to apply everything he learned in college. He learned how to prepare federal and state payroll forms and assisted clients with their tax preparations. Eventually, he learned how to prepare and file sales tax reports and maintain client’s bookkeeping. Once his internship was complete he was offered a full-time position as a Staff Accountant/ Tax Preparer at BSM Accounting Services and left Valley National Bank to pursue his career.
